An abandoned apartment building in Detroit that was once slated for demolition has been fully renovated and will soon reopen as affordable housing for formerly homeless people, who will only pay a portion of their low incomes as rent.
Saint Rita Apartments, a six-story building at 35 Owen St. off Woodward north of New Center, has undergone a $7.2 million top-to-bottom overhaul, including new hardwood floors, bay windows and cherry cabinets in its 26 one-bedroom apartments — all now fully furnished. There is imported Greek marble in the hallways and main entryway.
Built in 1916 and vacant since the 1990s, the building was damaged by fire and was lined up for demolition by the city in 2008, although it dodged the wrecking ball as Detroit slid into financial malaise. Saint Rita Apartments is scheduled to reopen in mid-March.
